Development of expertise in literature analysis and knowledge synthesis. Basic principles of stiffness, deformation, efficient stress and strength of soils, including sands, clays and silts. Elements of soil habits corresponding to stress-strain-strength behavior of clays, effects of sample disturbance, anisotropy, and pressure rate; strength and compression of granular soils; consolidation concept and settlement evaluation; and important state soil mechanics. The course develops a framework for understanding the altering relations between science and religion in Western tradition since antiquity.
